The Lord’s Closet (TLC) was founded in 1989 by the Rev. Wallace J. Crowley Jr. when he felt a
calling from the Lord. Before starting TLC, the Mr. Crowley owned and operated 2
Electronic/computer stores. Mr. Crowley, having spent most of his life in business, responded to the
call of the Lord. In only 6 days he closed the store and wondered what was ahead of him.
God built The Lord’s Closet Ministries around him. After several months of shipping clothing to
missionaries around the world a local pastor had a family who needed clothing. Outfits were selected
for each child as well as for mom & dad. Visiting this family, seeing the tears of joy and smiles on
their faces did something inside that’s just as exciting today as it was in 1989. It’s a feeling that’s
hard to describe, you have to experience it to understand it. Within a few months we were spending as
much time helping local families as we did shipping things overseas. God’s plan for helping families
physically opened the door to also meet their spiritual and psychological needs.
At this point we did not have a name for the ministry. During a disaster relief project to the island
of St. Kitts we felt that we had to have a name for the ministry. The name of The Lord’s Closet was
one of the names offered by the group. Everyone loved the name "The Lord's Closet" (TLC) and a
ministry became official.
Since that day, thousands of families in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia,
Kentucky, Virginia, Florida, Louisiana as well as Guatemala, Africa, Romania, Philippines have
experienced the love of Christ in their greatest time of need through The Lord's Closet. TLC has
provided all of these services at NO CHARGE to those in need. Everyone is asked to make a donation,
which has made all this possible.
Understanding the true needs of people is not always easy, for the lack of physical goods is not
always what hurts the most. Being valued as a human being is of crucial importance at TLC. When
we give a gift, the giving has to say, “We cherish you as one of God’s children”. How do you do that?
Give things that are clean, attractive and functional!
Many of these people are the invisible working poor who have fallen on hard times due to a family
disaster. A long illness, loss of a spouse, fire, flood or other problems can result in loss of their home
and or personal belongings. Meanwhile others are barely making ends meet or coming up short each
month because they are living on fixed incomes.
By providing these people with essential goods that they cannot afford to buy, TLC helps to rebuild
lives and reestablish hope and trust in people who have experienced the worst side of life.
The Lord’s Closet primarily serves families in 11 Countie New Jersey.
Secondly, TLC has a big outreach to families living in poverty stricken sections of West Virginia
and Kentucky, better known as APPALACHIA. TLC works through local churches and agencies that
know the families in need and understand their circumstances. Goods and services are then
coordinated and distributed properly.
The Lord's Closet received a call from a pastor who wanted to build a Bible College in Ghana, West
Africa. He was referred to TLC by a church in California. Through faith and prayer the pastor made
the trip from California to New Jersey in an old van that was given to him along with $75.00. How
does someone make it from California to New Jersey in an old van and $75.00 unless God is directing
every mile. Bibles, books, 100 student desks, carpet, building materials, computers, office desks,
chairs, along with other needed items came together and were shipped to Africa. Today hundreds of
people have received the education they wanted. It is really amazing what God has enabled TLC to do.
Sixteen years of ministry and watching God meet the needs of thousands of children and their
families have surely made a difference in their lives and the TLC volunteer team.
The Lord's Closet is New Jersey's local missionary, serving the physical and spiritual needs of
children and their families since 1989.
